Russian FM Meets Syrian Opposition Leaders In Vienna

1038720373MEP: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with representatives of the Syrian opposition on Monday in Vienna to discuss ways to find unanimity on political transition at the intra-Syrian talks.

The meeting was attended by representatives from Moscow, Cairo, Khmeimim opposition groups, and the Kurdish Democratic Union Party.

Qadri Jamil, one of the leaders of Moscow-Cairo opposition group, told Sputnik “we spoke about how to speed up Geneva process and find ways of reaching unanimity on the political transition and primarily composition of the transitional governing body.”

“We have a very clear line here: to fulfill the agreement that the intra-Syrian dialogue should be truly inclusive and include both a delegation from the government and all groups, without exception, in the opposition spectrum,” Lavrov stressed.

Addressing the representatives of the opposition, Russia’s Foreign Minister noted that, unlike other opposition forces, they “do not try to put forward ultimatums or preconditions, and therefore focus on constructive dialogue, having already made a number of interesting and result-oriented proposals.”

Jamil, the leader of Astana platform in Moscow-Cairo group, Randa Kassis, representative of Hmeimim group Ilian Masaad and European representative of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) Khaled Issa held the talks with Lavrov ahead of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

The meeting with the opposition, which was held ahead of his talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry and the conference of the International Syria Support Group, was useful, according to Lavrov.
