Libyan forcesMEP: Forces aligned with Libya’s unity government say they have captured the port in the city of Sirte as street battles continued with Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) terrorists on Friday.

The triumphant troops managed to retake the city following fierce street battles after the naval forces recaptured the coastal areas.

Sirte is the most significant IS stronghold outside Iraq and Syria.

Analysts have warned that the fall of Sirte would not mean the end of the jihadis in Libya, where they have fed on political and military divisions since the 2011 uprising that killed Gaddafi.

A source from the operations room in Misrata said fighters from the front line in the south of Sirte had looped round to the seafront to capture the port, which lies about 5 km (3 miles) east of the city center.

Reuters quoted pro-government forces as saying that at least 11 of their fighters were killed in the Friday battle. The troops are still engaged in sporadic street clashes to completely cleanse the city from terrorists.

Daesh started expanding into Libya in 2014 as the political turmoil and conflict in the country worsened. It took full control of Sirte last year, but has struggled to retain territory or win support elsewhere in Libya.
