US Airstrikes Kill 150 Somali Shabab Militants
KABUL: (MEP) At least 150 al-Shabab militants have been killed in a US air strike struck a training camp in Somalia, the Pentagon said.
The fatalities occurred on Saturday in the north of the Somali capital of Mogadishu, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said on Monday.
“We know they were going to be departing the camp and they posed an imminent threat to US and [African Union] forces,” Captain Davis added.
Pentagon officials said they did not believe there were any civilian casualties, but there was no independent way to verify the claim. They said they delayed announcing the strike until they could assess the outcome.
Declining to give further details, Davis noted that the training camp had been under surveillance for some time prior to the drone attack.
Somalia has been the scene of deadly clashes between government forces and al-Shabab militants since 2006.
