Treatment of Cancerous Tumors with Brachytherapy in Iran

image_650_365KABUL: (Middle East Press) Iran’s nuclear scientists took a step forward in treatment of malignant tumors by producing metal particles called “seeds”.

Brachytherapy is a radiotherapy in which a sealed radiation source is placed inside or next to the area requiring treatment. The metal seed which contains the radioactive material and is placed in the cancerous cells by a surgeon was locally produced by the scientists in the Research and Development Center of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).

Earlier Iran imported these “seeds” from the US and Germany but the sanctions in recent years made importing them hard.  Researchers of AEOI managed to manufacture the seeds in the country.

Iranian scientist announced that all production steps of this radiopharmaceutical was solely done in Iran. They also claim that these seeds can be used in treatment of variety of cancers such as prostate cancer, eye plaques, pancreatic cancer and breast cancer
