The fight had erupted at the prison known as Granja de Rehabilitacion Canada the previous day, the officials added on Monday.

Deputy Interior Minister Elmer Sosa says police and soldiers intervened after Sunday’s bloodshed and restored order at the prison.

The prison was designed to hold 600 inmates but houses 3,092 this is while a debt-ridden Mexican company has been tasked by Guatemala to expand the prison.

Prison system spokesman Rudy Esquivel says the fight apparently erupted between members of the Mara 18 and Mara Salvatrucha gangs and fellow inmates who don’t belong to the gangs.

The Mara gang groups, which originated from the United States, are known for their activities such as armed human and drug trafficking, theft, identity theft, illegal immigration, and money laundering.
