MEP: Two separate explosions have reportedly killed at least six people and injured 20 in the Turkish towns of Silopi and Van located in the southeastern part of the country, local media reported.

The blasts occurred on Monday after one bomb targeted a passing police vehicle in the town of Silopi in Sirnak province near the border with Iraq killing at least five civilians and injured 19.

Local NTV television network reports that the second blast triggered by a hand-made explosive device was placed in a street sewer and detonated as a police car was passing by. It also reports that authorities suspect that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is behind the attack.

Tensions between Ankara and the Kurds escalated in July 2015 when a ceasefire between Turkey and the PKK collapsed because of a series of terror attacks allegedly committed by PKK members.
