Russia Calls For ‘Regime Of Calm’ In Syria

Syria-conflictMEP: Russia has called for a “regime of calm” in two towns in the Damascus countryside after several attacks in northwestern Syria killed over 100 people, Russian defense ministry said on Monday.

The temporary truce in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta town and the town of Daraya for 72 hours, starting on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Sergei Kuralenko head of the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria cited by Russian Defense Ministry, reiterated Moscow’s calls for militants to withdraw from areas controlled by the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra group.

He said information from Russian monitors and Syrian intelligence shows that al-Nusra has gathered a force of some 6,000 militants in preparation for an offensive in the Aleppo province.

“These conclusions and estimates have been confirmed by non-stop fire on Syrian armed forces in Eastern Ghouta and living quarters in Damascus,” he said.

At least 150 people were killed on Monday in seven near-simultaneous explosions targeting bus stations, hospitals and other civilian sites in the seaside cities of Jableh and Tartus, which are Assad strongholds.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) terrorist group claimed responsibility for attacks.

According to UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, over 400,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict since March 2011.

Since September 30, 2015, Russia has been conducting airstrikes against ISIL and other terrorist groups in Syria at the Syrian government’s request.
