Powerful Storm System Hits East Coast Killing 4 Virginians

KABUL: (MEP) At least four people have lost their lives including a boy as a powerful storm system brought deadly tornadoes to Mississippi and Louisiana wreaked destruction along the East Coast on Wednesday as well as knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses in the region.

Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman for the state police, said in a news release a possible tornado hit Waverly, Virginia, killing three people and a 2-year-old boy.

“The Appomattox County man’s body will be taken to a medical examiner’s office for identification. Seven others were injured in the county.” Geller added.

Geller also says at least 15 structures were destroyed and 25 injuries were reported when the storm passed through Essex County and the town of Tappahannock, about 45 miles northeast of Richmond.

Forecasters had warned that more than 88 million people were at risk of seeing some sort of severe weather Wednesday.

Some 209,000 customers were without power, officials with utility companies in several states and the District of Columbia said.
