Javed Bajwa Selected As Pakistan New Army Chief

MEP: Pakistan’s government appointed Javed Ashraf Bajwa as the new army chief of staff on Saturday, by replacing General Raheel Sharif. The development is a boost for democracy in the coup-prone nation and the first smooth transition for the top military job in 20 years.

After weeks of intense speculation and rumors, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has finalised the selection of two senior army officers as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC), according to DawnNews.

General Sharif was appointed in November 2013 and is stepping down at the conclusion of his three year term without seeking an extension like his predecessor, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. Kayani’s term lasted from 2007 to 2013; he succeeded Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan’s former president, in the role.

Gen Bajwa currently serves as the Inspector-General Training and Evaluation, a post Gen Sharif held before he was promoted.
