Yemen Ceasefire Set For April 10: UN

KABUL: (MEP) The United Nations announced later Wednesday that a ceasefire across Yemen will begin on April 10, raising hopes for a breakthrough in a war that has brought the impoverished Arab country to its knees.

UN special envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said “The parties to the conflict have agreed to a nationwide cessation of hostilities beginning April 10 at midnight in advance of the upcoming round of the peace talks, which will take place on April 18 in Kuwait.”

More than 8,000 people have been killed and about 2.3 million others have been displaced since a Saudi-led coalition — which includes Kuwait — began an air war in March last year in a bid to reinstate the fugitive former Yemeni president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who is a staunch ally of Riyadh, and undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement.
