UN Security Council Insists on Transparency in Afghan Elections

KABUL (MEP) – The UN Security Council commends Afghans for their courage and calls on all presidential candidates to honour the code of conduct they signed pledging respect and adherence to the electoral process, and to preserve its integrity.

While applauding for all Afghan voters, the UN Security Council in a statement called last night on the Afghan electoral institutions to ensure that the votes of Afghans are accurately counted, MEP reports

“The Council called on the Afghan electoral institutions, including the Independent Election Commission and the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission, to ensure that the votes of Afghans are accurately counted and that results are determined in a fair, inclusive and transparent manner,” the statement said.

At the same time, the Security Council also urged all stakeholders to refrain from premature conclusions and accusations and respect electoral process.

The counting process has begun with the IEC, and according to the set schedule, the preliminary results is scheduled to be announced on Oct. 19 and final ones on Nov. 7.

However, there are worries about organized fraud and videos posted on social networks that confirm this.

According to the Independent Election Commission (IEC), 2 million, 196 thousand and 436 people have cast votes.
