U.S. Heads Hold Meeting on Afghanistan

KABUL (MEP) — US officials and military leaders held an important meeting in White House to review and finalize Afghan peace and agreement with the Taliban.

US President Donald Trump has said the meeting was held this morning Saturday, August 17, at the White House.

“Just completed a very good meeting on Afghanistan,” Trump wrote in a tweet. “Many on the opposite side of this 19 year war, and us, are looking to make a deal – if possible!”

Trump met at his Bedminster golf resort with Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, national security adviser John Bolton, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford and Zalmay Khalilzad, US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation.

Meanwhile, the eighth round of US peace talks with the Taliban in Qatar ended last week and Khalilzad went to Washington to report the progress, and speculation has been mounting over the signing of a US agreement with the Taliban in the upcoming days.
