Theresa May Announced As New British Prime Minister

20394823MEP: Theresa May has officially announced as the new British Prime Minister by Queen Elizabeth ll on Wednesday replacing David Cameron as head of the UK government.

May, the second female Prime Minister after Margaret Thatcher, who ran the government between 1979 and 1990, quickly appointed key members of her cabinet, including former London mayor Boris Johnson to the top post of foreign secretary and vowed to honor the referendum to leave the European Union.

Prime Minister Theresa May will continue to form her new government later – as she begins her first full day in Downing Street.

Mr Cameron stepped down after Britons rejected his entreaties and voted to leave the EU in a referendum last month, severely undermining European efforts to forge greater unity and creating economic uncertainty across the 28-nation bloc.

In his farewell statement outside Downing Street earlier on Wednesday morning, Cameron said May would provide “strong and stable leadership.”

Speaking as she arrived at the prime minister’s office at 10 Downing Street, Ms. May, 59, who had served for six years as home secretary, sought to position herself firmly in the tradition of “one nation” Conservatism, stressing her commitment to helping the underprivileged and pledging to fight “burning injustice.” She also promised to preside over an economy that benefits everyone.

“As we leave the European Union we will forge a bold new positive role for ourselves in the world, and we will make Britain a country that works not just for a privileged few but for every one of us,” Ms. May said, as her husband, Philip, stood nearby.
