Saudi Arabia Tries To Cover-Up Using Chemical Weapons In Syria And Sudan

MEP: The Permanent Representative of France to the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) tells about Saudi’s attempt to prevent raising the issue of using chemical weapons against non-militants in Sudan and Syria.

Mr. Philippe Lalliot said in a special interview with gouvernement.fr: “Our organization’s fact finding team which started its activities from 2014 aimed at gathering information and evidence of using Chemical Weapons in Syria, recently has obtained some evidence of Islamist group Ahrar Al-Sham’s using yellow phosphorous chemical weapon against non-militants in Syria. However, Saudi permanent representative to OPCW, Abdulaziz Bin Abdullah Abohaimed, is trying too much to thwart the process of the investigations.”

“I’ve also obtained information showing that the chemicals are buried beneath waste depot in northern city of Saraqib, 20 km from the city of Idlib, at about 12 meters depth in a storage including six barrels”, Philippe Lalliot told our correspondent.

Formerly, between January and September 2016, Amnesty International released documents of 32 cases of chemical attacks in Marrah mountains in Syria. The attacks have been carried out by aircrafts. The survivors said they detected smells of rotten egg, mould, pepper and chlorine.

Using Chemical weapons are strictly prohibited by the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and using it in any way will face consequences by the organization. It is worth mentioning that Saudi government has fully supported Omar al-Bashir regime in Sudan.
