Possible Attacks Reports In Brussels During Ramadan

brussels_112115gettyMEP: Reports have been surfaced across Belgium that Brussels may once again see terror attacks beginning in June, as schools, hospitals and public places where people gather for Euro-2016 related events may be targeted by extremists during the Islamic Ramadan holiday, local media reports.

Belgian law enforcement authorities have called on soldiers patrolling the streets to be on high alert.

Information from security services on the possible terror threats was released in Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN), a Dutch newspaper.

Despite the heightened sense of alarm, the terror alert level in Brussels remains unchanged at three. The highest level, four, is triggered when authorities have information about a specific attack.

The threat level around certain strategic locations — such as a number of sensitive embassies in the Belgian capital — has in fact been reduced in recent times. However, if law enforcement and security officials receive further detailed information in the coming days, making the terror threat more concrete, it has been reported that up to 1,500 troops may be deployed to protect Brussels.

Belgium has been on high alert since twin suicide bombings hit Brussels’ Airport and Maelbeek Metro station on March 22. The Metro station was not far from the building housing the EU Commission and the Council of the European Union, as well as NATO headquarters.
