Khalilzad Alike With Taliban: Attack On Lawyers Aimed To Disrupt Peace Process

KABUL (MEP) – The US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay khalilzad condemned the attack against the Afghan Attorney General’s lawyers, saying the attack were aimed to disrupt, delay the peace process.

“The US strongly condemns the attack today against the Afghan Attorney General’s lawyers and other team members working to facilitate prisoner releases,” said Zalmay Khalilzad in a post on twitter Tuesday. “This attack, carried out by enemies of peace, took the lives of five civilians.”

“This attack underscores what we all know: Spoilers (both domestic and foreign) are trying to disrupt and delay,” he said.

Khalilzad called on the Afghan government to identify the perpetrators of yesterday’s attack; “We call for a full investigation to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”

He also stressed that “Both sides should not be deterred, and push forward to take the steps necessary to reach intra-Afghan negotiations, where a comprehensive ceasefire & a political settlement can be negotiated as quickly as possible.”

The remarks come as gunmen attacked a vehicle carrying employees of the Attorney General’s Office in Kabul’s Deh Sabz district yesterday, killing five people, including two lawyers, two employees and a driver.

Moments after the attack, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the attack was not carried out by them.

“The peace process has many enemies, we all need to be aware of the conspiracies,” Mujahid said.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility for yesterday’s attack so far.
