Jordan Closes Border To Syrian Refugees After Blast Kills 6 Soldiers

Jordan-Syria-BorderMEP: Jordan announced to close its borders with Syria on Tuesday after a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb in a no-man’s land outside a Syrian refugee camp which claimed the lives of six soldiers and injured a dozen more.

It is not clear who was behind the attack, which took place Tuesday outside the Rukban camp, in the area where the borders of Iraq, Syria, and Jordan meet, Jordanian Army General Mishal al-Zibn announced that the northern and northeastern border strip with Syria is a closed military zone as of Tuesday.

The Jordanian government said no new refugee camps would be built and none would be expanded.

“We are closing the area and considering it a military zone,” said Mohammad Momani, a government spokesman. “We are also not building nor expanding any existing refugee camps and we call upon the international community to understand our sovereign measures and our need to take this measure in order to maintain our security and stability.”

Jordan’s King Abdullah II vowed to strike back at the perpetrators “with an iron fist,” adding that, “Such heinous terrorist acts will only make us more determined to carry on with our fight against terrorism and its groups who plotted in the dark against the men who protect the country and its borders.”
