Iraqi military defeat Daesh near Syria, gain key crossing

The Iraqi forces on Saturday morning have captured a border crossing with Syria from the Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group in a successful operation.

Reuters said Al-Waleed the area which together with two other passageways links Iraq and Syria, came under government control as the Syrian government and its allies are hemming the terrorists in on the other side of the border.

Al-Waleed, in the far west of Iraq, fell to the hands of the terror group in 2015, giving the militants full control of the Iraq-Syria border, which they vowed to erase as part of their ambition to build a caliphate.

Al-Waleed is close to the al-Tanf crossing on the common border, which is the key to the Baghdad-Damascus Highway and also links up to the main Baghdad-Amman route.
