Internal Disputes Among Israelis Over The Settlements

MEP: President of the Supreme Court of Israel and the member of Israeli right-wing party, Miriam Naor, has criticized the law of occupation legitimacy and accused the government of despotism.

“All decisions of the majority are not necessarily consistent with the principles of democracy but it could also be despotic,” Naor Said in Judges Appointment ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Thursday and before the Minister of Justice, Ayelet Shaked. She added that the Supreme Court must consider the rights of minorities and referred to her stance on the bill of occupation legitimacy.

She said: “Majority vote is a necessary, but not sufficient condition of democracy.  Without curbing the power of the majority, the system may become a tyranny. Such things have happened. A majority that denies individuals their rights, a majority that oppresses the minority living in its midst, is not a democratic administration.” Naor went on to say that “Protecting basic principles and human rights is the exact democracy. Consequently, all states must respect the rights of others.”

Yariv Levin, Israeli Tourism Minister and a member of Knesset for Likud, criticized her and said in an interview with the Israeli military network on Friday: “All this way for the president of the Supreme Court to put a challenge to the ability and the right of the Knesset and the government to work and apply their powers is, in my view, problematic. It is absolutely forbidden.”

“The Supreme Court acts on twofold values and a judge try to assume her thoughts on others. This is reflected constantly,” he added.

Naor increased her bodyguards, after the Israeli right party and the settlers’ protests for evacuating Amona by the order of the Supreme Court.

Despite Naor’s relatives negates any objective threat, she increased security after protest rally in front of the Supreme Court. Other protests were held in front of Noar’s house raising slogans “No to the dictatorship of the Supreme Court”.

In the meantime, reports suggest that Israeli security forces plan to evacuate Amona on Saturday. The order has been issued by the Supreme Court two years ago and Israeli right-wing party has opposed the bill.
