Four Dead In Canada School Shooting

7702802KABUL: (MEP) At least four people have lost their lives and two others wounded in a shooting at a high school in the northwestern Canadian province of Saskatchewan, officials said.

The attack occurred around 1:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) in the aboriginal community of La Loche when a gunman opened fire at the high school, with initial reports suggest that five people were killed.

“I’m not 100 percent sure what’s actually happened but it started at home and ended at the school,” La Loche Acting Mayor Kevin Janvier said, adding that the assailant walked in and “opened fire in the building.”

“He shot two of his brothers at his home and made his way to the school,” Janvier further said, adding that his 23-year-old daughter Marie, a teacher, was also among the dead. “I’m just so sad,” he said.

The communality school is for pre-kindergarten to grade 12 pupils and houses up to 900 students in two buildings.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking from the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, said what had happened was “every parent’s worst nightmare”.

He added: “The community is reeling.”

Canadian authorities have seized the suspect’s gun, according to Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Supt. Maureen Levy.

“I can tell you that we have one male in custody. Public safety is no longer at risk and we have secured the firearm.”
