MEP: At least seventeen people were killed after a huge fire erupted at a home for the elderly in a village near Ukraine’s capital Kiev.

Ukraine’s state emergency service said in a statement on Sunday, one is also missing.

The fire had started in the early hours of Sunday morning in a privately-owned two-storey building that was temporarily housing 35 people, according to the source.

Emergency services units saved 18 people, five of whom have been hospitalised with burns of varying degrees of severity.

According to Ukraine media, Prime Minister Volodymyr Hroysman expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the “terrible tragedy” and called for an immediate investigation into the cause of the fire.
