Explosion In New York Leaves 29 Injured

MEP: At least 29 people have been injured in an explosion in a busy part of the US city of New York on Saturday.

The city’s mayor said the blast was appeared to be intentional, adding that there was no evidence of a “terror connection”.

“It is too early to determine what the incident was caused by. We believe it was intentional. A full investigation is under way,” he added.

The outdoor explosion occurred at 135 23rd Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues, outside the Associated Blind Housing facility that cares for the visually impaired.

A police official said on Twitter that a second potential device was being investigated.

Police spokesman Stephen Davis said the explosion is believed to have originated inside a trash bin, NBC reported, stating that the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force is at the scene.

The White House said in an announcement that President Barack Obama was briefed on the explosion.

“The president has been apprised of the explosion in New York City, the cause of which remains under investigation. The president will be updated as additional information becomes available,” the White House said.
