MEP: British Prime Minister David Cameron has described Sadiq Khan the mayor of London as a “proud Muslim and proud Brit” just weeks after attacking him for having alleged links to Islamic extremists (Daesh).

Speaking in Roehampton, south-west London, Cameron said: “Let me first of all congratulate Sadiq on his victory. He talked about his father. He’s the son of a bus driver. I’m the son of a stockbroker, which is not quite so romantic.

“But he makes an important point about our country. In one generation someone who’s a proud Muslim, a proud Brit and a proud Londoner can become mayor of the greatest city on Earth. That says something about our country.

“There are still barriers to opportunity that we have to get rid of. There are still glass ceilings we have got to smash. There is discrimination in our country that we have to fight.

Sharing a platform with Sadiq Khan, Cameron attempted to show solidarity with the London mayor just weeks after being accused of participating in an Islamophobic campaign against him during the mayoral race.

The prime minister had linked Khan with violent extremists “again and again and again.”

However, the prime minister denied the accusations of pro-Brexit supporters claiming that anti-Brexit warnings predicting the economic downfall of the UK should it citizens choose to leave the EU were “part of some massive establishment conspiracy.”

Addressing activists at the event, Khan said: “There are many things upon which the prime minister and I will disagree. But what’s really important is when it’s in London’s interests for the mayor of London and the government to work closely together, we will work closely together.”

He implicitly criticised the remain campaign being run by the prime minister by saying he wanted a positive case for the EU to be set out.

“The reason why London is the greatest city in the world – and it is – we have never taken an isolationist approach, we are open-minded, we are outward-looking, we embrace other cultures and learn from other cultures and ideas as well,” he said.
