Bahrainis Protest Against The Trial Of Sheikh Qassem

protest in BahrainMEP: A number of supporters of Sheikh Issa Qassim, Bahrain Shiite leader poured to the streets last night in protest at the start of his trial.

The protesters marched along the streets in the capital, Manama, as well as its suburbs, to denounce measures against the 79-year-old cleric, who is the spiritual leader of Bahrain’s main opposition bloc, the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society.

Moreover, local residents switched off the lights of their houses in response to calls by opposition groups and chanted slogans on rooftops in condemnation of Sheikh Qassim’s forthcoming trial.

Eyewitnesses said the Bahraini security authorities stepped up security measures in the region of Aldraz (residence of Sheikh Issa Qassem) trying to prevent the spread of protests to other areas.

The area around the home of the Shia cleric is hosting thousands of Shia protesters in the decision Khalifa announced last month that the Bahraini government has canceled his citizenship.

The Al Khalifa regime recently abolished citizenship of Sheikh Issa Qassim in action against on humanitarian law.
