Powerful Earthquake Hits Near Iran’s Mashhad, Killing One

MEP: At least one person dead as a powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck northeastern Iran near the holy city of Mashhad on Wednesday, making residents fled onto the streets and aftershocks shook the region.

Iranian state television described the temblor as hitting near Mashhad.

The shallow quake damaged at least four villages near its epicentre in the Sefid Sang district, a remote mountainous area home to 5,000 people, located about 50 miles south-east of Mashhad, according to reports.

In addition, seven others have been injured, PressTV reported.

Iran’s Red Crescent Society said relief workers have also been dispatched to the nearby cities of Sarakhs, Torbat-e Jam and Fariman, as well as the rural district of Sefid Sang.
