Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu Resigns

635843997124815506MEP: Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, because of a dispute with the country’s president, resigned from the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Al Mayadeen television network announced in a breaking news that Davutoglu Turkey’s Prime Minister and head of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) because of conflicts with “Recep Tayyip Erdogan,” the country’s President, has resigned from his position.

Erdogan is pushing to establish a presidential system in place of the current parliamentary system based on the claim that the country cannot be run by two strongmen. Davutoglu has, however, asserted that such a system would eat away at his authority.

Official sources say Davutoglu’s decision to set aside his position as AKP leader, who also serves as the prime minster, was evident in his call for a special political convention to be held in a few weeks. Reuters says five AKP officials confirmed the decision.

Mr. Davutoglu has served as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s handpicked successor, but the two have been jostling for power in recent months.
