Afghanistan Grabbed With Three Million Addicts

Addicts in AfghanistanMEP: Ministry of Counter Narcotics says three million Afghans are addicted to drugs that make up 11 percent of the country’s population.

Mohammad Hanif Danishyar, spokesman for the Ministry presented on Monday at the press conference on the occasion of World Day to Combat Drugs, expressed deep concern over the trend of increasing the number of addicts in the country.

He said the officials of the Ministry strain to prevent the increase in the number of addicts.

“The addicts are being treated at the hospitals created for them” Danishyar added.

Due to the increasing insecurity, cultivation has been amplified in some provinces and now in 20 provinces drug cultivation is growing, he further added.

According to figures announced by the spokesman for the Ministry of Counter Narcotics, up to 3 million of the country’s citizens, including women and young people, are addicted.

This comes as Dr Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) also confirmed the increased in poppy cultivation in the country a few days before and called on the international community to participate and cooperate Afghanistan in the fight against drugs.

Afghanistan is still at the top drug-producing countries and more than 70 percent of the world’s opium last year, was generated in the country that its highest revenues have been spent in the development of insecurity.
