Three Arrested In Tunisia Linked To Berlin Suspect Anis Amri

MEP: The nephew of Anis Amri, the man suspected of being responsible for the attack on a Berlin Christmas market, has been arrested with two others by authorities in Tunisia, the country’s Interior Ministry said Saturday.

CNN reports Amri, who was killed by police in Italy, asked his nephew to pledge allegiance to Daesh (ISIS) terror group.

The two were in communication via an encrypted messaging app, but police have not determined whether Amri conducted his attack alone or with assistance from his nephew or others.

He is one of three men being held in prison on “suspicion of belonging to a terrorist organization and connections with terrorist offenses,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also said Amri was in touch with his nephew and sent him money through a third party after asking him to join the “Abu Al Wala” cell operating for ISIS in Germany.

It is unclear whether the suspects helped Amri flee Berlin.

At least 12 dead and 48 others injured after a truck plowed into a Christmas market in western Berlin. The truck on Monday rammed into the market outside the popular market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.

Before his death, Amri pledged his allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and called for jihadists to take revenge on “crusaders” bombing Muslims, a video posted on Islamic State’s Amaq website showed. It was not clear if the video was made before or after the Berlin attack.
