Queen Elizabeth II Forced To Miss Christmas Church Service Due To Heavy Cold

MEP: Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, 90, will miss a traditional Christmas church service for the first time in nearly 30 years due to a heavy cold, a statement by Buckingham Palace said on Sunday.

“Her Majesty The Queen will not attend Church at Sandringham this morning,” read the statement.

“The Queen continues to recover from a heavy cold and will stay indoors to assist with her recovery.

The church service near her Sandringham estate in rural Norfolk, 110 miles (177 kilometers) north of London, is an important part of the royal Christmas celebration. Local residents often gather outside the church to see the monarch.

Elizabeth has attended the Christmas service at the parish church of St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham every year since 1988.

The Queen, and her husband, 95, had been due to catch a morning train from London King’s Cross to King’s Lynn for their traditional Christmas holiday, but failed to turn up.

They traveled instead by helicopter on Thursday.
