A statement released from Guerrero’s prosecutor’s office states that the bodies were all male and were discovered in the mountainous Zitlala Township.

The corpses had “visible signs of torture,” the statement said, adding that forensic experts were sent to the region to examine the bodies.

A local police source told AFP that some of the bodies had bullet wounds and injuries caused by a sharp weapon.

The corpses were discovered on Wednesday, but the investigation was delayed until Thursday due to bad weather.

The prosecutor’s office said that one of the dead men was a member of a local Guerrero drug cartel.

Guerrero is one of Mexico’s poorest and most dangerous states, plagued by drug-related violence and crime.
