Russia Welcomes US-Taliban Peace Talks

KABUL (MEP) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomes the US-Taliban peace Talks in Qatar, saying his country is ready for any cooperation in the process.

Russian FM said at a news conference in Moscow that Russia hopes the peace talks between US and Taliban will end to the intra-Afghan talks.

He further said that Russia has already made a lot of contributions to Afghan peace and once again supports the creation and signing of a US-Taliban peace agreement.

According to Lavrov, the US-Taliban peace deal will pave the way for intra-Afghan talks.

The Russian foreign minister described the US role in Afghanistan’s issues as important because of its physical and military presence and emphasized that his country supports Afghanistan peace process.

He added that they are in contact with the Taliban and will try to help them reach a peace deal.

Late last year, Moscow hosted direct talks between Afghan leaders and Taliban representatives.

Although Russia supports intra-Afghan talks, the Taliban have repeatedly opposed.
