Putin And Rouhani Condemn U.S. Missiles Against Syria In Phone Call

MEP: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani have condemned US action against Syria in a phone call, the Kremlin said on Sunday.

The leaders agreed that recent U.S. airstrikes in Syria were unacceptable and violated international law and called for an “objective, unbiased investigation” into the incident involving chemical weapons which killed more than 100 people last week in Idlib province, the Kremlin said in a statement on its website.

Despite the lack of evidence, the United States blamed the Syrian government and launched an attack on Syria’s Shayrat Airbase in Homs province early on Friday, firing 59 Tomahawk missiles. Both Putin and Rouhani denounced Washington’s aggressive actions towards the sovereign state.

The two heads also announced their readiness to deepen cooperation to fight terrorism.

The phone call between Moscow and Tehran on Sunday came as Washington’s UN ambassador said that in light of Tuesday’s suspected chemical attack, which prompted the first direct US military action against the Syrian government, President Bashar al-Assad cannot stay in power.

In an interview with CNN, Nikki Haley said peace in Syria was impossible with Assad still at the helm.
