Human Rights Concerns Of Rising Child Marriage

Simar SamarMEP: Afghan Human Rights Commission has expressed concern over the increase in forced marriage at an early age and urged the government officials to put more efforts in this direction.

The meeting of “prevent child marriage in Afghanistan” was held today by the Independent Human Rights Commission in Kabul.

Sima Samar, head of Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission said at the meeting that “the forced marriage at an early age is very high” adding that “this factor is one of the leading cases of violence against children, especially girls”.

“The government had no political commitment to reduce child marriages, she further added while urging the government to take more efforts in this regard.

Ms. Samar said forming a family is a right, but this right takes place compulsory in early age in Afghanistan.

According to the source, children’s marriage in 1392 solar year, was 226 cases which has increased in 1394 to 235, indicating the government’s lack of attention to this matter.

Samar also said one of the reasons families force their children to marry is poverty which has led in many cases that families sell their female children at early age.
