High Bride Dowry, The Main Cause Of Violence In Jawzjan
MEP: Women Rights Activists say in Jawzjan province, one of the causes of the rise in domestic violence and suicides of women is the high level of girls’ dowry.
Head of Women’s Affairs in the province in an exclusive interview told the Middle East Press, the weak economy and lack of jobs in the province have caused many problems and on the other hand, the high dowry of Girls and the high cost of weddings in the villages of the province are mostly caused violence.
Najiba Qureshi, said unhealthy competition among families and the low level of rural people’s awareness in the city have made them to raise a dowry for their daughters and urge the groom family to pay a catastrophic cost for the wedding.
The girl’s family demand one million or more than that from the groom’s family and this process makes the girls to stay at home for so many years for not finding the money from the groom, Mrs Qureshi added.
She says most cases of domestic violence, committing suicide and running away from home are raised from the same issue that has not received the perfect solution in this field.
At the same time, experts of women’s rights from this area have expressed concerns, saying the process can continue bring many challenges.
According to the officials of Women’s Affairs department officials, about 138 cases of women have been recorded in the department of which, 12 cases are murders of women and girls and 5 cases of committing suicide.
