KABUL: (MEP) Officials on Saturday said, the operation by security personnel to recapture Darqad district of northeastern Takhar province has been successfully.
The operations to regain the district was launched on Friday evening, Sunatullah Timori, the governor’s spokesman said, adding that both sides had suffered casualties during the operation.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Interior (MoI) spokesman Sediq Sediqi at least 20 Taliban insurgents were killed during the operations.
A number of militants were also arrested by the national security forces as clearing operations firmly continue in parts of Darqad district, Sediqi added.
On the other hand, Darqad district chief, Abdul Ghafoor, claimed militant resistance had weakened. He said the whole district would be cleared of rebels during the ongoing operation.
Gunfire was being heard in most areas of Darqad. “Some rockets have hit civilian houses. We are in a state of fear and don’t know which side is in control,” according to Najmuddin, a resident of Qaghni area of the district.
