Government Efforts To Reform Electoral System: Hashimi

Syed Zafar Hashemi, a deputy spokesman for Afghanistan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani,  speaks during a news conference in KabulKABUL: (MEP) The government of Afghanistan is trying to put in action the obligation made in reforming and improving the electoral system.

Sayed Zafar Hashimi, spokesman for the presidential palace said that the government respects the parliament as well as creating an acceptable electoral system for people.

He said Sarwar Danish, second vice president is currently discussing to people and institutions within and outside the government to achieve a solution “practical, logical and legal” to reform the electoral system.

The reforming of the electoral system was the main part of the agreement that the National Unity Government (NUG) was created based on.

Therefore, President Ashraf Ghani has appointed a special commission for reforming the electoral laws in the country in mid last year.

After a few months, the Commission has presented proposals to President Ghani and based on that, the president announced the amendments made to the electoral law for legislative decree.

However, the parliament last December rejected the appeal, arguing that the constitution according to representatives of the constitution cannot reform the electoral law in the final year of its career.

Parliament and the IEC, with the launch of the selection committee members of electoral commissions that were formed after the president issued a decree, opposed and called it illegal.
