Eight Egyptian Police Killed In Attack On Outskirts Of Cairo

mideast-egyptMEP: At least eight Egyptian policemen were killed after a number of gunmen attacked a police vehicle in the Helwan district south of Cairo, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

In a statement released on its official Facebook page, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said that the assault was carried out by four gunmen dressed in civilian clothes.

“The gunmen with automatic weapons got out of a small pick-up truck, stopped the police car, sprayed it with bullets and then fled” the statement added.

The interior ministry said the dead included a lieutenant and seven lower ranking policemen who were patrolling the area just south of the capital when they were ambushed late at night.

Residents told Reuters the gunmen wore masks. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Such deadly assaults are often blamed on ISIL-affiliated militants mainly based in Egypt’s restive Sinai Peninsula.
