During Ghani’s Visit To India, The Country Pledges $1 Billion To Afghanistan

MEP: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in which the two leaders discussed wide range issues and signed several accords on Wednesday.

The country has pledged $1 billion in fresh aid to Afghanistan.

Among the agreements signed were on extradition, a mutual legal assistance treaty and peaceful uses of outer space, the Indian ministry of external affairs said.

The two leaders discussed the regional situation and expressed grave concern at continued use of terrorism and violence in the region for achieving political objectives.

Modi reiterated India’s abiding support for a unified, sovereign, democratic, peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan.

“To this end, the prime minister offered that, as a close neighbor and friend of Afghanistan and its people, India would allocate a sum of $1 billion USD to the war-torn country,” read the statement by India’s ministry of external affairs.

The $1 billion aid will be for Afghanistan’s capacity and institution building.

President Ghani on his part thanked the cooperation of India and exemplified the recent cooperation of India in Afghanistan.

Ghani and Modi meanwhile welcomed intensification in the interaction involving India and Afghanistan with regional and other countries and international organizations to foster peace, stability and development in Afghanistan.
