The accident occurred in the village of Los Limones on a road that runs close to the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca.

Officials reported earlier that at least 15 people had died, but corrected that toll late Sunday.

Those injured were taken to the nearby hospitals.

Road accidents are one of the main causes of death in Mexico. Approximately four million traffic accidents occur in Mexico that claim around 24,000 lives a year, which amounts to almost double the number of people who die from drug violence.
