KABUL: (MEP) Officials said Sunday that at least 1,800 displaced families have received much needed aid packages in northern Balkh province.

Abdul Saboor Qaderi Balkh Refugees and Repatriations Director said the packages include flour, ghee, beans, sugar and blankets and are from Saudi Arabia.

He added “The displaced and repatriated families were identified by a joint team of Balkh officials during the past 15 days and were provided special cards”.

Meanwhile, a number of families that received the aid packages said their living conditions were extremely bad and that they need more help.

“I am a widow. I have nothing to eat. We are six people in the family,” said Bibi Gul, head of a displaced family.

Rahimdad, the head of another displaced family who returned from Pakistan three months ago said unemployment and a bad economy forced him to leave his hometown.

He complained about the mistreatment of some government officials with regards to displaced families.

“They have a stick in their hand. They hit the poor people while distributing aid packages,” he added.

Such aid packages, from Saudi Arabia, are much needed as tens of thousands of Afghan families have been left displaced over the past few years – mostly due to the ongoing war.
