Dissension between Saudi and Iran has been raging after the kingdom executed Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a move that triggered an attack on Saudi’s embassy in Iran after the residents set fire on the missions.

According to the released statement, Afghan government has condemned the attack on the embassy and consulate office of Saudi Rabia in Tehran and Mashhad one-to-one.

“Afghanistan believes that the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations as well as other customary international practices regarding protection and immunity of diplomatic mission obliges the host countries to prevent attack on diplomatic missions and to ensure safety and security of these entities,” the statement read.

Afghanistan has pursued friendly relations with all Islamic countries as well as its neighbors and called for normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the statement noted.

The attack on Saudi embassy also saw other countries such as Sudan, Kuwait, Bahrain and Turkey to halt or downgrade their relations with Iran.

However, Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani earlier said that the Saudi regime cannot hide its ‘crimes’ by cutting ties with Iran.
