Russia’s Defense Ministry Plane With 91 On Board Crashes In Black Sea

MEP: A Russian defense ministry plane with 91 people on board has crashed as rescue helicopters have discovered debris in the Black Sea which went off radar en route to Syria, a statement by the ministry said.

The Tu-154 plane had crashed shortly after taking off from the southern city of Adler, south of the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, at 5:40 local time (0240 GMT), according to local agencies.

A total of 83 passengers and eight crew were on board when the plane dropped off radar.

The plane was carrying Russian servicemen and members of a renowned military choir and dance ensemble, the Alexandrov Ensemble, who were being flown into Russia’s Hmeymim air base in Syria to entertain military personnel in the run-up to the New Year, the RIA news agency quoted the Defence Ministry as saying.

The flight originated in Moscow and had landed at Adler airport in Sochi for refueling.

Helicopters dispatched from Sochi to search for the aircraft have discovered the crash site, the ministry reported.

So far, no survivors have been found in the sea, local rescue services told Interfax.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies that President Vladimir Putin had been informed of the situation and was being kept updated on the search operations.

Tu-154 aircraft have been involved in a number of accidents in the past.

Earlier in December, another Russian Defence Ministry crashed in Siberia with 39 people on board as it tried to make an emergency landing near a Soviet-era military base. Nobody was been killed in that incident, though 32 people were airlifted to hospital.
