istanbul-metro-1KABUL: (Middle East Press) At least five people sustained injuries after an explosion caused by a homemade bomb rocked a train station in Istanbul overnight, Turkey’s semiofficial Anadolu Agency reported.

The incident occurred about 5.15pm Tuesday (2.15am Wednesday AEDT) which came at a time of growing jitters over security in Istanbul and the risk of a militant attack in Turkey’s largest city.

There was conflicting information about the cause of the explosion, Atilla Aydiner, the district mayor speaking to Turkish television, said a bomb caused it.

However, Istanbul’s city government, in a statement on its website, said the explosion’s cause was unknown and under investigation.

The blast, which was heard in several areas of the city, hit an overpass close to the metro station in the Bayrampasa district of Istanbul’s European side.

Earlier reports had said the cause of the blast could have been linked to an electrical transformer and that six people had been injured.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
