30 Die As 5-Story Building Collapses In Nigeria’s Lagos

800x450ximage36.jpg.pagespeed.ic.20j9Cnxx0EKABUL: (MEP) At least 30 people have been killed when a five-story building caved in in Nigeria’s Ikate Elegushi area of Lagos, Reuters reported, citing officials.

A woman, her three-year-old child and a food vendor were reportedly among the dead.

Six people have been rescued so far and many others still trapped, according to spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye.

Victor Suru, a bricklayer who moved from the neighbouring country of Benin Republic, says his brother, his wife and child died in the collapse.

“The Lagos State Fire Service , the Lagos State Police Command, Lagos State Ambulance Service, the Rapid Response Squad, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and the Civil Defence Corps are on ground to ensure people are rescued and given proper medical attention,” The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager, Michael Akindele said.

Aid officials had initially put the death toll at four. However, relief workers pulled out more bodies from the rubble by Wednesday afternoon.

The building located at Horizon 1, Lekki Gardens which was under construction, was part of the phase 3 project by the Lekki Garden Estate, caved in at about 4.10am after a heavy down pour. Report said up to 100 masons were working at the site.
