24-hour Gunfire Ends On Indian Consulate In Mazar

KABUL: (MEP) Clashes between five armed assailants and hundreds of Afghan security forces near the Indian consulate in Mazar-e Sharif after killing of all invaders, ended.

The provincial government media office said the operation was jointly conducted by the special forces of the Afghan National Police and Afghan National Army under the supervision of acting governor Gen. Ata Mohammad Noor.

Insurgents launched an attack on the consulate at about 9.00 pm on Sunday night.

Clashes between strikers and hundreds of security force lasted for more than 24 hours and finally at around 9:30 last night ended with the killing of five attackers.

After a day of heavy fighting, Special Forces were dropped by helicopter on to the roof of the building in a bid to eliminate the insurgents.

Supreme General Atta Mohammad Noor who was personally led the operation until the last minute were present at the event.

Security officials in Balkh said the Indian consulate employees were not harmed in the clash and at least nine civilians, including a security guard were wounded.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
