The Department of Petroleum is one of the key departments in the Ministry of Commerce and Industries of Afghanistan which has reportedly been in the monopoly of influential figures during the past several years.

In an online post, Dr. Tamim thanked President Ghani, the ministers of high council of state enterprises, including Minister of Finance, Minister of Commerce, and Minister of Economy for his appointment in the key department.

Dr. Tamim has previously served with the Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (AISA), Dawi Oil Co. Ltd, and Afghanistan Commercial Bank and is the shareholder of Aria TV.

The appointment of Dr. Walid Tamim as the new director of Department of Petroleum is seen as a key step in curbing the rampant corruption in the country.

Corruption has been one of the main challenges being faced by the Afghan government which is considered a threat worse than the Taliban-led insurgency.
