Heatwave Kills 70 In Southern India

361071-heat24.05.15KABUL: (MEP) At least 70 people have lost their lives due to intense heat wave in the southern Indian state of Telangana in the past few days with majority of them labourers and daily wage earners.

According to Indian government officials on Thursday, the perennially-drought affected Mahabubnagar district bore the brunt, accounting 30 deaths. As many as 11 people died in Medak district which recorded its highest temperature of 42 degrees Celsius.

The Indian weather department has ruled out any respite from the sweltering heat in the coming days and local government officials have asked people not to venture out in the scorching sun.

Two deaths were reported in Nalgonda, which was the hottest place in the state on Wednesday at 43 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature in Hyderabad and most of the other places was 41 degrees Celsius.

In 2015, more than 500 people died due to sunstroke in Telangana and the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh.
