974767hhuKABUL: (Middle East Press) The government of Afghanistan has formally and officially confirmed the Taliban’s supreme leader Mullah Omar’s death late Wednesday.

A statement was issued by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani’s office in which states “The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, based on credible information, confirms that Mullah Mohammad Omar, leader of the Taliban died in April 2013 in Pakistan,”

The confirmation from Presidential Palace (ARG) came after sources within the Afghan National Security Council reported earlier in the day about the death of Taliban’s one-eyed leader – who has rarely been seen in public.

According to statement, the government of Afghanistan believes that grounds for the Afghan peace talks are more paved now than before, and therefore calls on all armed opposition groups to seize the opportunity and join the peace process.

Unnamed sources earlier in the day show that Mullah Omar – whose regime was overthrown by U.S.-led NATO invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 – reportedly died two years ago.

Omar, who was Afghanistan’s 11th head of state from 1996 to late 2001, was believed to have been living in Quetta and Karachi cities in Pakistan.

However, the Taliban group have not commented regarding the reports so far.
