KABUL: (MEP) CEO Abdullah Abdullah met with Indian businessmen in New Delhi in a bid to encourage them to invest in Afghanistan, the CEO’s office said in a statement on Thursday.

Abdullah thanked the Indian government and non-government sectors for their help in Afghanistan and encouraged them to invest further in the country – especially in the infrastructure, energy, agriculture, health, education and technology sectors.

The statement said that the Indian officials and businessmen also welcomed Abdullah and promised to look at investing in Afghanistan.

On Wednesday Abdullah said in meeting with top industry bodies in New Delhi, “Our geographical position as a land bridge offers massive opportunities to investors in terms of trade, transit and connectivity”.

CEO Abdullah also talked to Indian investors about the Chabahar port and said that it would act as a key route to India-Afghanistan trade.

He hoped that a proposed Afghanistan-Iran-India transit agreement centered on the strategic Iranian port of Chabahar would ‘happen in near future’.

“The development of Chabahar port in Iran is key to India-Afghanistan trade. It can act as a gateway towards opening new energy and trade routes not only in Afghanistan but in Central Asia as well,” he said.

Iran has been seeking international investment to help complete the port, which Kabul says will provide a gateway for Indian companies seeking to do business in Afghanistan and Central Asia, as well as in Iran.
