Worshipers attacked near ‘Finsbury Park Mosque’ in London

At least one person has died and 10 others have been injured after a vehicle ran over pedestrians close to two mosques in a north London neighbourhood, UK police have said.

The Sunday night incident occurred when a man with his van rammed into worshipers coming out from the Finsbury Park Mosque. Britain’s largest Muslim organization said it was a “violent manifestation of Islamophobia.”

The assailant was found detained by members of public at the scene and then arrested by police in connection with the incident,” a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said.

The attacker is understood to be Darren Osborne, a 47-year old living in Cardiff, Robert Booth, Steven Morris and Ian Cobain write, according to The Guardian.

The attacker who reportedly shouted “I want to kill all Muslims” is reportedly a married father of four whose family are reported to be based in Weston-super-Mare. Police were on Monday searching an address in a cul-de-sac in the Llanedeyrn area, close to Cardiff golf club in the north east of the city suburbs.

It is the fourth terror attack in the UK in three months, after incidents in Westminster, Manchester and on London Bridge.

The Muslim Council of Britain in a statement condemned the Finsbury Park Mosque attack, and said that the perpetrator was “motivated by Islamophobia.”

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Theresa May was speaking after chairing a meeting of the government’s emergency Cobra committee.

“The terrible terrorist attack which took place last night was an evil borne out of hatred and it has devastated a community,” she said.

“I am pleased to have been here today to see the strength of that community coming together, all faiths united in one desire to see extremism and hatred of all sorts driven out of our society,” she added.
